Encaustic Minis 2016
Series 2
These small encaustic paintings are done on 4×4 in. heavyweight illustration boards and each are mounted on a signed 6×6 acid-free matboard. The illustration boards are made of 100% cotton fiber, acid-free paper.
Images in these paintings are drawn from a Chinese painting manual called “Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden” compiled during the early Qing Dynasty in the late 1600s. One technique I employed in most of the pieces is wood glue burning. It’s what gives the paintings that rich amber color.
“There is beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.” – Rachel Carson
